PSHE

At St Ann’s Heath, we know the importance of providing our children with a strong understanding of the diverse world around them and want to support our children in playing a positive role in contributing to the school and the wider community. Our PSHE curriculum equips children with relevant and meaningful content, which is supported through a strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health. In an ever–changing world, it is important that they are aware, to an appropriate level, of different factors which will affect their world and that they learn how to deal with these so that they have good mental health and well-being. It promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils, preparing them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences for later life. Our Relationships and Sex Education enables our children to learn how to be safe, and to understand and develop healthy relationships, both now and in their future lives.

Intent

  • Ensure our children see the value of themselves and others within the community.
  • Encourage our children to be empathetic towards others members of the school community and wider society.
  • Provide our children with the vocabulary to express their emotions and feelings and the knowledge of how respond to them appropriately.
  • Equip our children with the skills they need to build healthy relationships both now and in their future lives.
  • Enable our children to explore and express their differing experiences and emotions in a supportive environment.
  • Empower our children with the knowledge and skills to look after their own mental wellbeing.

Implementation

  • PSHE lessons are taught weekly following the Jigsaw Scheme which is divided into half term blocks covering these areas: Being Me in My World, Celebrating Difference, Dreams and Goals, Healthy Me, Relationships and Changing Me – this includes our RSE Curriculum.
  • Three short circle-time sessions (check in, check up and check out) per week are completed which explore a variety of issues and discussion points including school values, a class issue, a special event/ week.
  • Movement breaks are scheduled to increase the amount of physical activity that the children are getting each day.
  • Each class participates in regular Forest School Sessions during the year to enable children to develop their physical and mental wellbeing by being outdoors, learn new skills and to take managed risks.
  • A Restorative Practice behaviour strategy has been embedded across the school which enables children to practise the skills of listening to each other and coming to a common solution for a variety of issues. Staff have been trained in this approach and keep reminders in their lanyard to help with the questions to ask children if an incident occurs.
  • A Reflection Room is available at lunch time for children to support self-regulation.
  • The school values (Respect, Achieve, Inspire, Strive, Encourage) are reinforced through assemblies, focus weeks, value stickers, star of the week, excellence awards, special mentions certificates and class shout outs.
  • Children have the opportunity to hold a variety of roles within the school to develop their sense of responsibility including as School Council representatives, House Captains, Eco council representatives and Year 6 leadership roles.
