PE

At St Ann’s Heath, we believe Physical Education should give all of our children the tools and understanding required to make a positive impact in their own physical health and well-being. We want all of our children to experience a wide variety of sports and physical skills which will enhance life-long fitness and life choices. Our PE curriculum challenges and promotes self-esteem through the development of physical confidence and problem solving while also teaching our children to cope with both success and failure in competitive, individual and team based physical activities.

Intent

At St Ann’s Heath, we aim to engage, encourage and inspire our pupils to immerse themselves into Physical Education and develop a lifelong love of physical activity, sport and exercise.

Our curriculum allows our pupils to understand what physical activity looks and feels like and how, with practise, they can improve their skills sets to reach high quality outcomes. Our pupils are taught in a safe and supportive environment, where they foster the ability to understand fairness and equality of play to embed life-long values. We aim to provide our pupils with a breadth of opportunities to support their development in physical activity, exposing them to a range of sports as well as building on their understanding of teamwork, whilst enriching them into an inclusive curriculum where there is access for all. Our pupils develop skills of movement, together with opportunities to advance and apply their interpersonal skills, including determination, self-belief, honesty, teamwork, respect and passion; all of which are celebrated at St Ann’s Heath. We also intend to implement skills such as self-evaluation in order for our pupils to analyse the performance of themselves and others and how they might work towards further improvement.

Most importantly at St Ann’s Heath, we want our pupils to enjoy being active and to appreciate the physical and mental health benefits of an active life-style now and in the future. We equip our pupils with a range of transferable, life-long skills, so they leave our school with confidence and a drive to rise to different challenges.

Implementation

Our broad curriculum exposes pupils to different types of sports, encouraging them to foster a love of PE, through activities such as tennis, athletics, orienteering, dance and water safety. As a school, we believe that PE must be inclusive but should also expose children to an element of competition. Our pupils take part in two PE lessons a week, with Years 3 and 4 taking part in an additional weekly swimming lesson during one half-term.

We strive to encourage our pupils to take part in physical activity not only through timetabled lessons, but through movement breaks between lessons, exposure to a range of play equipment at lunchtimes and participation of the Daily Mile. We offer a variety of extra-curricular clubs at St Ann’s Heath which include; football, tennis, dodgeball, athletics, netball and dance, adopting a multi-agency approach where positive behaviour is modelled and that of a good sportsman.

At St. Ann’s Heath, our qualified coaches follow the program ‘GetSet’, where lessons are planned to cover the National Curriculum themes of athletics, dance, gymnastics, OAA and games (net & wall, invasion and striking & fielding). The curriculum considers the importance of both the breadth and depth of learning.  Our lessons are always built on from previous learning and skill acquisition, by use of skills ladders to ensure progression from Years 3-6.  Each lesson begins with a warm-up, followed by our pupils working through a range of progressive activities around a theme or intended learning outcome, which is shared with them at the beginning of each lesson.  There are always opportunities to extend and challenge individual pupils and provide support for others.

At St Ann’s Heath, we provide our pupils with plentiful of opportunities to compete against other schools through our local school games network, other leagues and fixtures organised by individual teachers. These include football, tennis, netball, indoor athletics and cross-country. We also hold an annual Sports Day where every child competes in an event for their team.
